Autodesk 3ds Max

Autodesk 3ds Max delivers powerful 3D modeling, animation, and rendering tools for architecture, product visualization, games, and motion graphics. The 2027 release introduces Smart Bevel for post-Boolean workflows, an expanded procedural noise system, new field-based simulation tools, and Autodesk’s first AI assistance steps inside 3ds Max — making complex modeling tasks cleaner and faster.

What’s New in 3ds Max 2027?

Autodesk has focused the 2027 cycle on filling long-standing gaps in the modeling toolset. Autodesk These updates directly improve daily workflows for archviz, product visualization, and game asset creation.

Smart Bevel

A new tool that creates post-Boolean bevels by following mesh topology outward from selected edges, building a continuous transition surface between two distances. Autodesk Unlike the existing Chamfer modifier, Smart Bevel handles dense or irregular Boolean intersections cleanly, reducing manual cleanup on complex meshes. Fully non-destructive.

Noise Plus Modifier

A new procedural noise system that expands capabilities well beyond the classic Noise modifier. Includes Simplex, fractal, and tileable noise options, with clamping, inversion, per-element phase randomization, and world/object space switching — deterministic output for reliable results across distributed render nodes.

Field Helper

A new SDF-based helper for building procedural field effects. Supports box, sphere, torus, cylinder, and mesh-converted volumes, each with falloff control, and outputs float values, vectors, or maps for flexible scene-wide procedural driving.

Extrude Modifier — Now Directional

A long-requested update: the Extrude modifier now supports a Gizmo-based extrusion direction, no longer locked to the local Z axis. Add depth along any axis or a custom direction.

Autodesk Assistant (Tech Preview)

An early technical preview of the new AI assistant. In the initial release, it functions as an integrated chatbot searching Autodesk documentation to answer workflow questions directly inside 3ds Max. Symetrigroup

Arnold 7.5 (MAXtoA 5.9.0)

Updated Arnold integration with improved volume and hair rendering, new stylized shading options (Line Shader, Nearest Points Shader), and refined bloom rendering.

Platform Update

3ds Max 2027 requires Windows 11. DirectX 9 support has been removed. Updated to .NET Core 10, Qt 6.8, C++ 20, and OpenColorIO 2.5.1.

  • Note for studios using V-Ray, Corona, or Redshift: Third-party render engine updates for 3ds Max 2027 are not available at launch. Plan to continue production rendering in 3ds Max 2026 until your render engine vendor confirms a 2027-compatible release. Arnold is the only renderer with full 2027 support on day one.
